From the UK mag... AutoExpress.
Saab's loyal band of followers are in for a treat - at last the Swedish firm's top-selling 9-3 is to get the driving dynamics to match its advanced engines, with an all-new model based on the next-generation Vauxhall Vectra.
The totally new 9-3 is due to hit these shores in mid-2002, ready to take on the new Mercedes C-Class and Audi A4. Its 'evolutionary' styling changes are designed to appeal to Saab's traditionally conservative customers.
The current car's oval door handles, wrap-around windscreen and distinctive grille will be retained. Inside it will appear familiar, too, with the 'aircraft-style' dash, ergonomically designed seats and ignition key located behind the gearstick.
The range won't be limited to the five-door shown in last week's issue of Auto Express (issue 602), either. As with the current car - pictured - Saab will also offer a three-door 'coupé' and a cabriolet. An estate is also planned to take on the A4 Avant and BMW 3-Series Touring, but this will not be available until at least a year after the new 9-3's debut.
The new Vectra's chassis will allow Saab's turbo engines to step up a gear. The current suspension set-up can barely cope with the sportier motors' power output, but a combination of traction control and electronic stability aids will keep the 9-3 on line. To retain Saab's reputation for pioneering engine technology, it will be the first car ever to use the recently unveiled variable compression ratio system. This offers high power outputs combined with low emissions and fuel consumption.
