The current issue of Auto Express magazine carries spy shots of the latest Saab 9-3 hatchback. The most controversial change is swapping from a hatchback to a saloon; Saab bosses believe a booted car is essential for success in the small prestige market.
The car, due to hit UK roads in mid-2002, is also set to spawn a range of exciting models including an MPV, estate and even a two-seater roadster. The new 9-3 promises to be far better to drive than the current model, which, although it has always appealed to a loyal band of Saab customers, has never had the handling or refinement to really challenge its prestige German rivals. Rather than rely on outdated technology, the all-new 9-3 will be based on GM's latest Epsilon platform, to be used first by the new Vauxhall Vectra due for launch at the Frankfurt show this autumn. The same platform will later make it to the griffin's Omega. The Swedish company is pinning all its hopes on the new model, which will offer a wide variety of body styles to boost the car's appeal. The boot has been kept under wraps by disguise panels on the prototype (pictured above). However, fans of the traditional- looking Saab who favour the current five-door's practicality need not worry - the 'Coupé' three-door version will continue to use a hatch, while there are plans for a five-door estate and a cabriolet to join the range.
