They seem rediculous, yes. But I think there is a logic behind the madness. I would guess that about 80% of Ivy applicants are qualified. The admissions people want to find the most interesting, diverse group of acceptees that they can. Suburban upper-middle class kids from good high schools with good GPA and test scores and a slew of extra curricular activities are a dime a dozen. I go to a school which has a reputation for being one of the top ivy applicant safety schools, and its full of high scoring privileged white kids in explorers who dont generally dont give a damn about politics, poverty, making a real difference in the world. Its really kinda sad, seeing as we have this fantastic faculty which is forever trying to get these kids to care about something other than their own job/grad school qualifications.
accepting minority students (race, class, gender, sexual orientation) is not only to fill a quota. A lot of these people have had to work harder or against more odds to get to where they are now. Or at least this is the presumtion. If you want a top education from a school with a name, look outside New England. For example, UVA, Duke, Wake-Forest, Tulane, Davidson, are all top schools in the South, and are usually happy to get kids from other areas of the country. If you know what you want to study, just pick a school with an excellent program. For example, my first college, Guilford (NC), had a top program in Geology. Though the school was not a top school, if you wanted to get into a grad program in Geology, you were at one of the best places to do that.
If you have no clue what you want to focus your studies on, a good liberal arts college will fill the bill. There are lots of them, all over the country, with excellent reputations. They are pricy, but no more than the Ivy schools. One very interesting one I looked at was Goucher College in Baltimore. Skidmore, Trinity, Wesleyan, Davidson, etc, are all good choices, and you sound like you are qualified for all of them. give them a look. I think youve still got a while before the applications are due.
