in my field, law, where you go to school is important. It's much easier to get a job when you graduate from Harvard/Yale/Stanford. I happen to be in patent law, so school reputation isn't as important. However, if you had a degree like "philosophy" or "english," you are going to be a dime a dozen to a potential employer. A school can make you stand out. Even in patent law, there are places that won't hire you unless you came from an Ivy League school.
I personally chose to go to a non-ivy league school so that I wouldn't be broke when I finished school. I paid my own way through school, and coming out of Stanford/Yale/MIT with an engineering degree and 100k in student loans wouldn't be cool. As it was, I did really well in college and got grants, and I came out of engineering college with less than 3k in debt. (Unfortunately, I went to law school and went deep in debt for that, but that's a different story.)
And I think that Ivy League schools are better from the student standpoint. My friend from MIT said that everyone at MIT was a valedictorian. Also, at Arizona State University, I was thinking of joining a frat, but the frats do nothing there but party. My friend at MIT was in a frat, and he graduated with fairly good grades (MIT is known for actually giving out B's and C's, unlike other grade-inflating universities like Harvard). At ASU, engineering is too hard to party all the time.
