Radar detectors are illegal. And there is much greater use of radar cameras for red light and speed infractions. The margin for speeding has been getting less, especially in Victoria where there is a very strong campaign that "Speed Kills". Max. speed is 100 km/h except on some freeways (i.e. interstates) whre it may be 110 km/h.
Yes, drive on the left. No turning left through a red light (as in turning right through a red in many US states). If driving in inner Melbourne, there are streetcars (trams) and they have right of way (they're 15+tons so give way) and at many intersections there are different rules for making a right turn. Typically, you make a right trun from center of road but if tram tracks exist, it might be a turn that starts by pulling left, pulling across intersection (on left) then turning right once clear to do so (usually when the light turns green for the cross road). Such intersections should be denoted by a special sign some distance before the X-road.
There are many more gravelled roads than typical in USA - they can be fun to drive for the scenery but sometimes the surface can be like a bed of ball bearings. Also, watch for kangaroos and other wild life when well away from civilization - they can appear quickly an do heavy damage (like the SAAB moose test). And if you see a large rock in roadway, it may be a wombat. As one fellow rallyer reported years ago " I hit this rock in the roadway and it walked away" - his car was very damaged at the front.
If you want more - ask in return posting & I can contact you by e-mail for phone contact (I'm in central VA)
