John: I think that the press hype about this device has done it more harm in kind of way by having the general public preconceive a picture of it's uses as a consumer device far before it is ready for that application. The company is to blame for that as well, but that is too late to stop now.
The device is actually pretty neat, and probably will have a good reception in large buildings and campus style environments where there are large amounts of turf to cover. One such application is in large warehouses to aid the order pickers and processors who have to walk huge distances, and the time they do this is critical. Police departments are also looking at for the traditional "Beat" cop, and in fact, Manchester NH, and Boston have already signed contracts to use the device, as have UPS and Amazon .com, and the Postal Service
They really need to start there, with the postal service to get the concept proven, and most importantly, to establish support for use of the device without municipal or state regulatory intervention. If they cannot establish the validity of the device as one which is free of either registration, licenseing, or insurance, it will be dead. You would need to be able to just pull it out of your trunk and go for it to work as a consumer product( and it would have to cost no more than $1,000 bucks).
I think that it is a terrific design, and it will be built juast miles from where I live, so the potential impact on our local economy makes me want it to succeed.
I work in the medical device industry, where it's inventor,Dean Kamen, has made a huge impact in several market segments. That is no guarantee of success with the Segway, but Kamen has had a Midas touch with his other projects. I just think that all of the publicity that raised expectations that he was coming out with the best thing since sliced bread has created a problem in finding the right applications for the machine.
A friend is on the board, and has told me he will try to get me in to get a ride. I would actually rather fly Dean's Citation, but will start with the scooter.
