I designed and assisted in the construction of a 30x40 garage for myself. I built it before the house, so I could have a place to store an important auto and I didnt' need a house too bad at the time.
While it sounds like I have my priorities reversed building a house before the garage, it added to the valuation of my lot, making it easier for me to get money when it was time to build a house. I also had a place where I could immediately do car stuff and watch movies with my girlfriend, etc...
having an indoor place to wax a car is SOOOO nice, and I can change wheels without getting too dirty or soaked, and I can store all sorts of stuff, and people dont' accumulate my tools like they when I was growing up.
This picture is a couple years old. I've since insulated and put white painted waferboard on the walls and built shelves. Of special note is I have a cathedral ceiling on the sunnier side of the building with two skylights. This is the side of the building I use for work since it's nice and bright. The other side is mostly for winter storage. Plenty of light are handy. Plenty of outlets are handy. Cathedral ceiling will also let you have a lift if money later permits. Hasn't happened yet for me. Probably won't for a while. I put sound system stuff and bookshelves upstairs.
