I will start by saying that I am a rabid U2 fan, an idealistic 18 years old, and born and raised in Massachusetts (read: democrat). I check in with the U2 news websites everyday and today at youtwo.net I found a very disturbing article. The website had a link to a discussion thread not too dissimilar to those of saabnet, however the discussion was on FreeRepublic.com (a conservative news source). While many of the posters voiced support for U2's performance, some of those who did not like U2 for whatever reason resorted to accusing U2 fans of being homosexual, effeminate "pantywaists", and condemned U2 as a bunch of scheming dangerous liberals, only making music to spread their quasi-communist ideals and wreak havoc throughout the globe. One poster even suggested Bono, who once jokingly claimed he wanted to "fuck with the mainstream", would have supported 9/11 and the anthrax attacks as tools to disrupt our way of life because he is a proponent of anarchy. While I believe in free speech and have no problem with somebody being able to say this, these hateful people seem to have a problem with me voicing my opinions and think that U2 should have not been admitted to this country. U2 have only tried to console and hearten America since 9/11, and in my opinion, accusing them of using the Super Bowl as a purely promitional ploy is insulting as well as unfounded.
