Quinn: You might be confusing the two, and the US' role in developing GPS.
MLS was created as an alternative to the ILS for precision aproaches, and the current GPS system as it actually exists today, does not support this.It does work in Europe, as it does anywhere in the world. One area of confusion might be the fact that a GPS receiver must have a database installed in it that relates to the area of the world that it is being used in to be of any value. A GPS receiver can and will provide lat/lon coordinates anywhere in the world. It needs a period of adaptation when moved from one geographic region to another with the power off,as the engine needs time to re-evaluate the position of the best satellites to take it's signal from. Even if it does so, if you do not have a usefull database installed, such as an aviation or offshore chart, the lat/lon coordinates would be considered useless by many.
As for MLS,as far as I know, there are only about 20 in operation in the US. I ,like every other instrument rated pilot here, had to learn them in ground school, but never would be able to actually fly one since the equipment is not in general aviation planes, and even if it were, the airports that have MLs would not be accessable to GA aircraft.
Currently, toget vertical guidance from GPS, you need to be able to see at least four satellites, something which is not always possible. the accuracy is limited to about 100 feet vertical, which when added to the 75 foot altimiter tolerance, would make it's use a bit risky on even standard ILS approaches. For CAT 2 and 3, it is not as good as what is out there now.
Perhaps you can enlighten me on current MLS useage. Are all MLS approaches backed up by an ILS? Are ILS approaches still being designed and installed in Europe?
Thanks
Louis
