Quinn: About 500 hours TT. If you are still working on your private, then you are NOT working on your instruments. YOu will be required to take at least three hours instruction on instrument operation as a part of your private training, but a full IFR rating will be much more comprehensive. With flying, suggest you not put the cart before the horse. There is a ton of stuff to become proficient with before you start worrying about instrument flight, and besides, after you get your private, you will be required to log 50 hours of cross country time prior to beginning your IFR training.
I think a few others have been a bit hard on you about the GPS issue, but perhaps your instructor did not explain it correctly. There is no harm in learining about GPS ,but you will not be required to show proficiency in GPS to pass your first test. YOu will need to concentrate on VORs NDBs,and visual navigation for your license. I assume that you are not in the US, and obviously, my comments are based on US lisence requirements and practical test standards.
Good luck
