There is no doubt you are better off with a Mac in your field but it is discourging to learn of the (lack of) quality of the new products and the unacceptable business practices you describe. At a moment when Apple is gaining market shares, you would think they would do anything to stand by their products. As an editor, we have been using Apple computers for over 15 years and have had no problems whatsoever and have upgraded many units which still run flawlessly and are still usefull after eight to ten years. I must admit, with the imacs, which saved Apple from obliviation, the quality has dropped. Those first cd drives are truly horrible. Perhaps the golden rule we adopted served us well: Never buy a Mac when it first comes out. We wait for the price to drop and the bugs to die. Good luck with your studies and your Mac and as mentioned elsewhere: stand firm! Write to Steve Jobs if you have to; he once left Apple because his Board of directors insisted they put out products which he did not believe were ready.
