Back when I used to work in the industry, anywhere from 10%-20% of the cost of an extended warranty went to the sales person, another 20%-30% was store profit, and the remaining 50%-70% went towards covering repairs, operating the service department, etc. Extended warranties are definitely a high-margin item, but they're not pure profit since consumer electronics do break (especially today).
I generally use two rules to determine whether to purchase: 1)how inconvenient is it to go without the item if it breaks and I cannot replace for an extended period and 2)how fast is the technology changing - ie, if it breaks, will I want to use the opportunity to get a new one.
