Hacking Onstar

I'm interested in finding out if anyone has any experience in hacking onstar.
First, let me preface by saying I don't have in mind anything which I believe would be illegal. I own my car (2001 9-3 SE) and the Onstar unit that's in it. I don't believe there was any license agreement which prevents me from modifying the onstar unit in my car. And I certainly don't have any interest in attacking the onstar servers.
With that in mind, here are my thoughts. I signed up for the 30 minutes of free calling, and I like it a lot. The catch is that extra minutes are ridiculously expensive. If onstar is nothing more than a glorified cell phone, can't I just get the ESN and have my regular service provider provide service to that ESN?
In fact, since I have the phone number for my car, can I just go to the provider which onstar uses (Verizon) and ask to switch plans?
I assume that the voice activated dialing will still work because it is part of the glorified cell phone which is onstar. Otherwise, I could probably use the voice dialing provided by Verizon.
Has anyone tried this, or anything like it?
Bonus question: Is there anyway to check voice mail using onstar personal calling? Or in technical terms, can I have the glorifed cell phone known as onstar generate DTMF tones?
