They could jump either ferry to maine From NS and save HOURS of driving. By taking the Yarmouth ferry to either Portland or BarHarbor... btw, Bar Haba to Port is about a 4 hour drive in normal day traffic.
Once through Maine, look to use 84 to 81 to avoid the NYC/Washington corridor of snarl and traffic. The western route to head south does get into more mountainous terrain in the Appalachias, but then it is more scenic.
This route takes one through western VA instead of Eastern adn therefore less exposure to the VA state police. This is especially nice if the y use a radar detector as they are illegal in VA.
Once past the mid-point, its a crap shoot in my opinion, although again, going down 75 means avioding that east coast corridor...
Hope they have a fun trip.
