I've done Boston to Tampa/Bradenton a few times. Best route is I-95 (comes from Maine) to Boston, I-90 West towards Hartford, I-84 West to the NY border, I-684 (south only option) to I-287 (east I think, it says Tappanzee Bridge) over the Tappanzee Bridge into NJ on the Garden State Pkwy, then that hits the NJ Turnpike a couple of times, take that NJ Turnpike South (which is I-95 again), go over the Delaware Memorial Bridge (I-295 i think), which bypasses Philly, then that connects back with I-95 and goes right to Fla. At normal driving speeds this is about 26 hours from Tampa to Boston.
The worst part of the trip by far is NYC area, so that route over the Tappanzee takes it out of the equation. It is an alternate route for the dreadful NYC Moses infrastructure and the George Washington Bridge.
Another important thing is to make sure they do not take 95 right through Philly. I did that once, big mistake. It takes you hours out of your way and gets very confusing.
One more thing; if they can get through Boston by 10AM on a weekday, I've found that you do not hit any traffic until somewhere in Virginia. At 10Am there is not much traffic in Boston, you get through NYC by 2-2:30 beofore rush hour, and can get past those big NJ cities before 5PM.
They could also take I-95 all the way down to NY, then go to I-287 over the Tappanzee, but I think that cutting through CT is a shorter and nicer ride.
