As long as SUVs are not treated like cars for emissions and fuel consumption and crash tests, there is little we can expect
from them when it comes to modern engines and handling
and overall safety.
Even the X5 4.6i from BMW is a notorious Gas Guzzler
that burns 2x more fuel then ie. a 9-5 Aero.
Lets face it, Germany and Japan have reached an all
time high when it comes to building thirsty V8 engines
that offer little output for their size... and the
US has kept the good old pushrod V8s alive in pickups and SUVs...
In fact if Mercedes or BMW or Lexus would introduce a
8.0L V8 like used in some 70s Cadys. there would be plenty
of buyers around, no matter what the fuel burn is.
And the worst is that SUVs offer the highest margins
for all AUTO makers... GM, FORD, BMW etc. so there
is an incentive for industry to build them.
Take a new BMW 745 or a S600 and the MPG figures you
will get in realistic combined city and higway driving
will be little better then what cars would do in
the early 70s... there is a slight gain, but less
then one would expect after 30 years of research.
Fuel prices also will have no effect on demand cause
many people who drive a ie. X5 couldn't care less if fuel
was $1 per Gallon or $10 per Gallon... in fact todays
luxury cars guzzle more then ever when compared to
their times average car.
The only way to stop this nonsense would be a ban
on cars and SUVs that consume more then a defined
amount per ton. You bet, this will never happen!
Regards,
Coolknight
