As you said, fuel consumptions vary greatly under different operational conditions, espeicially driving styles. That's why there has to be a standard test cycle.
I'm not sure I get what you are trying to say: large CID is bad because they suck gas like mad; but now you are arguing that high performance cars like 745i fitted with a 6th gear to save fuel on cruise is undesirable? Remember that the particular implementation of the 6-speed in the 745i is actually lighter in weight than a typical 5-speed. That, to me, is progress. Even on unlimitted highways, you still have to drive at traffic speed and road condition. I'm curious as to what percentage of your engine operating hours is logged at 155mph. BTW, I'm not sure if you want to argue that people usually drive faster than speeds used in standard testing cycles if your beef is with large CID. After all, large multi-cylinder engines are highly efficient at high speeds compared to small CID-high rpm engines.
