The way I understand it, the receiver has to be mounted up high, with as good a view around the vehicle as possible. Hiding a receiver down low in the grill is self defeating, since you lose so much range. You also lose most of the ability to detect rear threats unless you have a second receiver mounted somewhere in the back of the car. The Valentine 1 website has informative tech articles about mounting locations and other issues.
It is really not difficult to remove a hard-wired, clipped-on detector from the windshield or visor when you park, and slip it in your pocket or lock it in the glovebox. For me, this slight inconvenience is worth it to get reliable detection.
The remote display (like the Val 1) complicates things. Maybe you could come up with a mounting spot that is unviewable from outside the car, like down low under the dash? Or in the ashtray opening of your 9-5 ....you could manufacture some sort of flip-up cover that would hide it when you leave the car.
