Fact is, 9-5 bumpers are surprisingly expensive to repair after slow speed accidents. I had one only four weeks after picking up my new 9-5. Totally my fault (first accident in 15 years and it happens within weeks of getting a new car - grrr!). Hit a small pick-up at a stop sign, turning right. He had started to pull out onto the road. I started going forward, looking to the left to see if anyone was coming. Bam! The pick-up had stopped and I didn’t see him. I didn't even have the clutch full disengaged when I hit him. I would estimate speed to be at 5mph. I hit his trailer hitch receptacle (the ball wasn’t there) slightly off center. We pulled over to the side of the road and checked out the cars. No damage to the pick-up. I didn’t notice any real damage (small scratch only) right away, so we went our own way without exchanging info. It wasn’t until two days later that I noticed the front bumper mounts were broken inside the passenger fender and the bumper was hanging down about a half inch.
To quickly jump to the end of this painful story, the cost of repair was just shy of $1500. The bumper skin was bent and needed replacement. There was also some damage to the front bumper frame brace that had to be repaired. The front passenger light mount was also damaged, although they were able to repair and realign it without requiring replacement. The shop did a great job and you can’t tell that anything was ever wrong.
I was definitely disappointed in the Saab’s repair cost and the amount of damage done in such a slow-speed crash. But I will say this. When I hit the guy, I could barely feel it inside the cabin. I obviously knew that it happened, but it literally felt like just a small tap. I guess the car did what it was supposed to do – absorb the damage into its body rather than mine.
