Well, it is the first (and only other) SW film since Empire not to end with the destruction of a large station by a small craft hitting it in a vulnerable spot... ;)

Ep 2 was by far better; Ep 1 gave us virtually no useful information, just a little backstory with alot of little-kid SFX.

Agreed, the acting was horrible, uneven for everybody, which is squarely on Lucas as a director. Remember, he didn't direct V and VI. But ham has always been a staple of Star Wars, it's just that most of us were too young to notice at the time. For example: we're all probably gonna groan a little when Scooby Doo comes out this summer but we wouldn't miss it back on Saturday morning 15 20 25 years ago.

As for plot, I wasn't expecting to have it all wrapped up for the audience -- Lucas is the recognized father of the modern merchandised sequel, so the we have to wait until Ep3 to get anything useful out of it. The complexity could have been handled better, but it ultimately makes no difference; we know how this thing ends. I think this also robs eps 1-3 of enjoying any of that good v. evil magic, because good is supposed to lose in all 3. Lucas made the middle three of the 9-episode arc first because they were the only ones that were immediately palatable.

SFX -- beautiful, expanisve, intricate -- and they get tiring. Same in alot of the current stuff (Lord of the Rings, etc.) It's the 'cast of thousands' concept amplified by cut-and-paste. Ep2 is especially egregious, you're wondering when it truly just becomes a video prospectus for ILM stock.

It'll probably get better with time. Ep1 does a little, but it's still last for sure. One could argue endlessly about the ranking of the first three, much less where this one might eventually end up.
