Go online to dell.com, compaq.com, or apple.com and you'll find some nice bargains. Stay away from Sony. If it ever breaks, you'll never be able to get it repaired. Also, Toshiba offers some nice models. Note that most companies outsource the manufacture of their laptops, and many of these outsourcers assemble them for multiple companies. So the differences between a dell or compaq are minimal. You need to choose in terms of service and support.

Also, laptops "get legs"... ie. get stolen... a lot! Especially in Asia. I'd encourage her not to use it in public in China, hide it safely in a large bag, and also get a security cable for it to secure it in her hotel room or home in China. A high quality laptop like a dell, compaq, or Apple is a magnet for thieves. If she walks down the street with it, it will be gone in a day.
