I've had the same problem due to high humidity. I added a cooler to the output line between the compressor and storage tank. Cooling the air causes the moisture to condese out to the bottom of the tank. Larger commercial units have this built in. I used an automotive oil cooler and put 2 box fans (like the fan on your computer only bigger) to move air accross it. Also had pretty good luck at making my filter work better by coiling up 20 feet of the air hose in a bucket of cold water.
As a side note the best HVLP I've used are the ones that come with their own "compressor" which is a set of fans that blows the air to the gun (through a 1 inch hose) more than compress it.
