I thought I was the only Saab with a CB :) I tried a cellular look-a-like antenna on my '87 9kT and the results were very poor. I'm not sure a long wire like you mention would work well as CB frequencies are line-of-site and benefit from being stuck in the air a bit, but I would certainly be interested in the results if someone tried it. To get resonable reception, I'm of the opinion that you need at least a 3 footer, like the "Lil Will" etc. Roof mounted (easy on a hatchback) and tuned it works quite well. Keep in mind that CB's only brodcast at 5 watts, so it really is important to have as good (ie big) an antenna as possible. Since you have a convertible with a trunk, you may want to try one of the brackets that mounts on the forward trunk lip, which should be less likely to scratch the paint than a mag mount. Interestingly, in Australia many folks have switched over the high frequency UHF for CB-type communication, a much clearer format (kind of like those family radios) that also requires a smaller antenna. Dunno if anyone uses it or if its legal in the US, I certainly haven't heard of it over here.
Good luck.
