It sounds a little like blackmail from the dealer. If the dealer is respectable, they should be trying to solve the problem and maintain a high service satisfaction index. A call to the regional rep is certainly appropriate. By the way, I am a field biologist and have owned 11 4x4 SUV's/trucks since 1975 (as well as my fun cars - '02 Aero now). Most have been Japanese. I have test driven a number of Grand Cherokees because they are one of the few SUV's with low range transfer cases that are suitable for heavy duty off-road travel. One test drive required entry from the passenger side because the driver's side door was inoperable. A second time, two years later, the dash instrumentation was inoperable. This spring, testing the top of the line "Overland" vesion, the rear suspension was clanking loudly on every bump! The quality control must be horrible - the design of these trucks is very sound... oh well... I ended up with the Mitsubishi Montero Limited - which is an extraordinary off-road vehicle and 45,000 trouble free miles (so far).
Best,
eric
