Bicycles are amazing on a number of levels- Posted by IrieTom [Email] (#1032) [Profile/Gallery] (more from IrieTom) on Tue, 16 Jul 2002 08:37:00 In Reply to: OT: Tour de France.....tour de where ? what ?, 91Aero.jr, Sat, 13 Jul 2002 15:45:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Physical health- bikes are low-impact on your joints (occasionally high-impact everywhere else if you MTB or ride in traffic) and great for your cardiovascular system.
Mental health- my MTB lets me get *FAR* away from motor vehicle traffic, simultaneously cleaning out the adrenal glands and getting my mind off everyday problems (like "how long do I need to save up for a new transmission?")
Financial health- my bike has been amazingly reliable and trouble-free compared to two previous MTB's. Every mile pedaled is one less mile on the (216,000) SAAB. Parts are just as expensive, but there aren't as many of them, and *everything* is DIY.
Environmental health- exhaust consists of CO2, no hydrocarbons or other toxic stuff. Environmental impact is usually very low (unless ignorant bikers go nuts during mud season), on the same level as hiking, far less than horses or any motorized vehicles. Road bikes account for a fraction of the wear and tear on highways that is too small to measure. Traffic jams would be a historical footnote if every single-passenger (driver only) car were replaced by a bicycle.
Intellectual stimulation- don't forget, Orville and Wilbur were bicycle mechanics. Saabnet is proof that gifted mechanics tend to be free-thinkers.
The next time you see a cyclist on the side of the road, give them space and give thanks that they aren't a big fat SUV spewing fumes and clogging up traffic.
