Looking at the engine online (sorry, forgot where), it is clear that the exhaust manifold is in the back and the intake in the front. The engine is oriented transversely. They have fitted a catalytic convertor immediately after the turbo, which I imagine will improve emissions immediately after starting.
It's impressive that this engine delivers more power with less boost than the current 2.0L engine. Does this mean more tuning potential? :-)
BTW, I was told by a guy at the dealership in town that this engine was developed in part because Saab had run out of room with their old engine, regarding improving emissions any further. The cat placement they have come up with would not seem possible with the old layout - exhaust manifold in the front. I would think this would be too hot.
A friend of mine has a Volvo 850 turbo, and their solution to start-up emissions is to blow fresh air through the exhaust manifold immediately after starting, to dilute the exhaust. Seems like cheating!
