Original redundancy.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Thu, 19 Sep 2002 19:11:56 In Reply to: automobile termonology, Quinn S. Kurz, Thu, 19 Sep 2002 18:31:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Yea, what's "un-original" miles? But when I used to do a lot of advertising of used cars in a previous life, if you advertised "80,000 miles" the first person to call would ask - "Is that original?" I have no idea why? I might guess that they mean, was it all miles by the one and only original owner? Or perhaps they were asking, are you sure that it hasn't been altered or reset? So I just started putting in the word original in the ads because I was tired of the question.
Technically, according to the DMV here in Calif., there are three choices to describe miles. The first is that the odometer is accurate. The second two are for "odometer descrepancies", that the odometer is "not accurate" or that the odometer has "exceeded mechanical limits" as in an older car that only reads to 99,999 ("five digit odometer") and you have no way of knowing for sure sure whether it's the second or third hundred thousand miles. If the "not accurate" or "exceeds mechanical limits" boxes on the DMV form is checked then there is an optional explanation line to be filled out. "Exceeds mechanical limits" is not a problem 'cause that almost always refers to older less valuable cars anyway as 6 digit odometers have been the rule for 10+ years. Checking the "not accurate" box makes a vehicle "TMU" or true miles unknown. Most dealers won't touch a car in this category because there is nothing that verifies the explanation, that is the story as to why the odometer is not accurate, may or may not be true.
