technical counter-point to efficiency question.

Hi,
There is a very easy way to check efficiency of an engine. You just
need to look at the torque curve. The torque is how much down force
is applied to crank-shaft multiplied by perpendiclar distance from radial
axis of crank-shaft at which the force is applied.
If an engine is inefficient at a given RPM, the inefficiency would show
up in the torque curve.
If you look at the torque curve of a Saab I4, it rises very steeply
from 0 and stays there up to 5000 rpm. The torque curve is beautifully
flat.
Turbo engines can get away with not having variable valve timing because
it already solves many of the issues solved by variable valve timing.
The holy grail of engine design is a flat torque curve, and Saab
achieves it to a large degree in its turbo-charged I4 engines.
So, if you want to look at engine efficiency, just look at the torque
curve and compare it to torque curves of other engines.
If Saabs do not get high mileage, perhaps the root cause is driving
habit of the average Saab owner.
thanks
Jae
