I've had a half day sit down with the head of Saab training, to be followed by a couple of days of Saab Service School for a NINES article. Your best bet is community college or tech school, possibly followed by some time in an "under the car" chain to develop basic wrench-turning skill. From there, dealer tech.
Saab service school *does not* cover basics - wrench turning, brake jobs, oil changes, anything like that. Naturally they dwell on the Tech II and the interface with the car's systems. Also, they cover assemblies and procedures unique to Saabs - quickly and efficiently getting the interiors apart and together, dropping powertrains, etc. Remember that repairing cars *for a living* is all about "beating the book" time wise and "no come backs." To do that with current Saab products, you need to be friendly with the Tech II, you need to be fearless when facing computer and electrical systems. Generally Saabs are pretty straightforward in the mechanical end of things.
