I currently work on these things on an almost daily basis. They are not cheap as the ones we have are in the $5,500-6,000 neighborhood. And just as you said they aren't available to the public. I've even seen some fo the newer designs coming into service pretty soon, pretty scary looking and expensive stuff. I've taken them home plenty of time and went out at night and had a blast. School aged kids get a blast out of them when they come by my workcenter for tours and such. The biggest problem with NVG's though is the cost of maintaining them in tip-top shape. Intensifier tubs are very expenvise indeed. By the way, using for prolonged periods will give you headaches as you described, even more so if the collimnation isn't set correctly. And yeah ITT is the place to get them, still expensive though.
See Ya,
Phil
