Hard to say, having not seen the Vector or Aero. Obviously I was at a big loss for rating the car, not being able to drive it. Thought I'd share what I could from the impressions I was able to get though. A lot of the things I didn't like about the new car (placement of controls, lack of hatch, different styling), are out of nostalgia for the old one. I think you're right on in saying that many in the Saab community are resistant to change. At times I certainly am part of that club. Sometimes that resistance is good, other times it's bad. I happen to find the window controls more functional in the center than on the door. So in that particular case, for instance, I think the resistance is good. Styling is just a personal preference.

The engine may or may not be a different story. I was just repeating what the service advisor and techs told me, but I must say that I agree in that ANY new engine is more than likely to be more trouble at first than one that's had 30 years to get the kinks ironed out. This isn't to say that the new engine won't eventually be better than the old one, as it may very well be (and I hope it is)...but I think what they were saying is that they expect growing pains, both as the engine comes into its own, and they learn how to work on it.

I thought my review of the new car was rather complimentary considering I'm one of the more avid lovers of the old Saabs!
