Hi,
Torque curve which is not flat means that there is less down force
on crank-shaft at some RPM's as compared to other RPM's. This seems
to indicate that engine is efficient at some RPM's and not at others.
Why is it that the new 2.0 Liter engine is not equally efficient
in a broad range like the previous 2.0 Liter engine? Does this mean
that the engine is in need of further tuning by Saab engineers?
What needs to be integrated is horse-power vs. time, correct? Power
is J/s and when integrated over time this gives just plain J. So,
given (area under curve) = mvf^2/2 - mvi^2/2, change in velocity can be
derived.
The reason why low-end torque is important is because this means
low-end power. Some people get confused by "low-end torque" and
"high-end power". What this really means is "low-end power" and
"high-end power".
So, when the power vs. time curve is integrated, an automobile with
good low-end torque (low-end power) will gain more energy as compared
to another automobile which does not have good low-end punch.
So, you're both right. Low-end torque is good for acceleration, and
horse-power = f(torque, rpm).
thanks
Jae
