GM has been installing these in all their cars for a long time now, and I imagine other manufactures are doing the same. But they have beat the government in court several times over being required to release the data to any government or private company. This topic has been debated a lot, but so far the right to privacy has always won out. There has also been a a lot of debate about OBD-III, which will have capabilities of remote shut-down and operation, another area where the government is trying to get into our privacy and rule our lives, but once again, privacy is still winning in the courts. I keep waiting for transmitters that limit your car to the speed limit on whatever street you are on, and the technology is just about there, its just a matter of letting it out. I know places like Paradise Valley and Scottsdale in AZ would love to have this power, with all of their speed and red-light cameras.
