I have (had -- gave it to a friend to use) an '87 Jeep Comanche, which is basically the truck version of the Cherokee. The engine will last a very long time, but the rest of the truck can be problematic. I've replaced darn near everything on the vehicle except alternator and power steering. There's been relatively little change from my vehicle to the last vehicle produced, although they did up the power somewhat. The good thing is that they are relatively cheap to buy and easy to fix. The bad thing is that you may have to fix them a lot. Some people don't have problems; others do. The quality is much more spotty as compared to Saabs. See the link below. I would definitely buy the version with the AWD and automatic. AWD or 4wd will decrease your gas mileage. If you ever go offroad, the Jeep is a very good offroader, even stock. As stated in other posts, the brakes suck and I also think that the front end design is problematic -- wobbles at speed occur often, as do ruined tires.
