My theory is that with European cars, the model number indicated how nice the car was.
In the 70's, the BMW 2002 was one of the nicest cars around. Then they replaced it with the 320i and we know how that went. Saab had the 99 which was almost as nice, then they came out with the 99 Turbo. It's a little-known secret that "turbo" is worth about 5000 model-number points, making this car the clear winner.
When they improved the 99, the new car became the 900, representing almost an order of magnitude improvement over the earlier model. This also placed it ahead of the Mercedes 300's, 500's, 560's, and so on.
Audi made a strong effort in the 80's with the 4000 and then the 5000. But Saab came back with the 9000 which was even better (especially in turbo form which was the equivalent of "14,000")!
