ground loops are basically caused because ground wires have some amount of resistance. Even though two devices are connected to the same point, if each wire has a different amount of voltage (caused by varying resistances of the wires) from the device to the point, this can cause humming and other problems. It's noticeable in audio electronics, as humming, but can create noise in other products too. It's more noticeable in homes as the ground wires are much longer. However, I had humming when I installed a radio in my truck.
