The 2.3l is a 2.0l with a larger stoke (hence why it won't fit in a C900, the longer crank throws won't clear the transmission or some such.) The 2.1l in a bored 2.0l. At any rate, both the 2.3 and NG900+ 2.0 use a different block to accommodate the balance shafts, but the fundamentals are otherwise the same.
As to elSaabs point, I tend to disagree. Yes, it's great that Saab has a new engine and it's time to move on, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be nostalgic towards the old engine and want a big last hurrah. Just like when GM switched from the classic small block Chevy to the LT1 and then LS1. Sure, the new engine is great, but the original is historic significant and still great engine which will be used for years to come due to is performance and inexpensive prices. Don't be so quick to dismiss someone who respects the significance and excellent design of the old engine as someone who is somehow stuck in the past.
