Automakers are renown for layoffs. It's part of the game. It's also part of the way capitalism works. If you need to trim costs you drop production and that usually means people get laid off. Sad but true. It happens in just about every industry. Xerox for example axed 2500 last year and is about to do the same again. Big companies (usually) keep going.
If Saab was about to die, no way would they have rolled out the new 9-3SS. It costs way to much to develop a car to do it and then kill the company.
And even if GM wants to get rid of Saab, they would sell it, not pull the plug. One of the Japanese companies, BMW or DaimlerChrylser would probably snap it up. Maybe even Ford, since they already own Jag and Volvo.
Saabs are not about to go away.
