I more or less understand your argument, but in places where the SUV ratio to cars is high and where traffic often does not flow the SUV is a real menace. Here in NYC there are plenty of SUVs. When driving they're a pain, when walking it's even worse. The situation in many parts of California is the same, but one doesn't walk around too much there (esp. in So. Cal.) The SUV has many more negative attributes besides just the low fuel mileage, which are widely documented and need not be delved into here...
Also the argument for low fuel mileage in a performance car was that the fuel mileage was sacrificed for very high performace. Exactly who really needs that is another story. However, for the SUV, for the most part you are just lugging around excess lbs. with no real everyday gains for most people. Sure some SUVs may be able to tow a large boat but this would be the exception to their regular use rather than the norm as opposed to a road trip from Hamburg to Berlin, at an average of 140 mph, for the weekend, every few weeks or so in a high performance automobile... or the extra passing ability at highway speeds a well engineered automobile can deliver whenever needed.
