We went from a C900 (now my daily driver) to a Volvo 940 Turbo wagon to an Explorer. We have 2 kids and do activities (skiing, windsurfing, kayaking, dog shows, my wife's art shows) that require room to haul stuff. We looked at minivans but after driving them on typical windy NH roads, decided an SUV was better. We've always had imported cars and the stiffer ride in our Explorer--not to mention better seats--was more what we're used to. Plus here in New England we wanted all-weather capes and the Exploder seems to go thru anything, and climbs the glacier our house sits on from Dec thru March.
BUT...I hate that it gets only 16 to 17 mpg around town (ours is a '96). Still, it does do 19-20 mpg on the hiway, even at 75 with a windsurfer and a kayak on the roof and a full load of people and luggage. The new mid-size SUVs are much worse, though--14 to 18 mpg. And seem destined to continue that way.
I personally don't like mileage under about 24 mpg, but if you need to COMFORTABLY AND SAFELY haul kidlets and loads of stuff you don't have much choice--size costs you in gasoline. Vans are getting better and the new MPV and the Honda Odyssey seem pretty good. If we had to replace the Exploder today, though, I think we'd get one of those.
