...it's all about lots. lots? yes, lots: all those folks who "need" all-wheel-drive demand it on their car dealer's lot so that, later, they can power thru a treacherous, nearly impassable, horrifically dangerous one inch of well-salted slush at their favorite mall's parking lot.
i used to live at 8600 feet above sea level - alta. utah skiers know that, um, it snows *alot* there - on avg 500" per season. they also know how steep the canyon road is. this was my "driveway" for two winters. my old saab 99 never had a problem. no problems in almost ten years of driving in new england, either.
i now live in the PNW. in seven years of frequent driving up to the mountains, the *vast* majority of cars whose drivers put them into a snowbank are s.u.v.s and all-wheel-drive cars (btw, the all-wheel-drive cars land on their wheels; often, the s.u.v.s do not). sometimes makes for bad traffic but always makes for terrific rubbernecking (and smirking when there are no injuries). oh well, at least it keeps the bodyshops neck-deep in Exploders and Outbacks - we can use any economic boost we can get around here...
