In thinking about how I assembled my growing set of tools, the cordless drill ranks among my top 5 tools. I use it constantly, mainly around the house. I've used it sparingly on the car, though it has come in very handy.
My number 1 tool is my Snap On ratcheting screwdriver. It has a hollow handle that holds about 7 or 8 bits (which it comes with, in a nice variety). $40
Number 2: ratchet, socket and wrench set. Best purchased in a large "package" rather than individually. Sears carries a wide variety of tool packages that include full sets (metric and standard sockets, deep sockets for both as well, various drive size ratchets)
Number 3: a good hammer. A must have!
Number 4: hose clamp tool (Wurth has one, flexible shaft) Perfect for C900 Saab laboring, to remove those hose clams around the turbo and IC all the time.
Number 5: cordless drill (though the dremel is doing its best to move into the top 5)
If you're looking for tools for just working on the car, think about a good set of needlenose pliers (Sears has a good multipack of these, too), a good wire striper (buy this individually, NOT in a package and NOT from Radio Shack), vise grips (these come in various sizes), a screwdriver variety pack, and a long flex shaft magnet.
