As one of the engineers who supports the shuttle program, I can say that there will definitely be significant talk about the potential debris damage during launch, which we have been analyzing ever since day-of-launch. There are many possibilities for what happened, but I think this has to be the biggest suspect at this moment. Earlier this week the issue was considered resolved, with no expected impact to safe landing.
We sometimes forget how truly incredible it is that this thing works with the success rate it has enjoyed. This is the second accident in 113 flights.
I wouldn't expect 3 years without flights, as happened following Challenger. Remember those 3 folks sitting up on ISS? They need a ride home.
This may be the last I'm able to say before I get an official gag order. But rest assured there are many competant folks working to figure out what happened. As you receive information from the mainstream media etc., please remember to take it with a grain of salt, and refrain from jumping to reactionary conclusions.
