The first number, the xW, is an indication of the ability of the oil to flow or pump up at low temperatures.
The second number is an indication of the film thickness at 210 degrees F, regarded as normal operating temperature.
The lower the first number, the faster the oil will pump up in extreme cold, and also in mild cold.
I doubt much that the average customer would be able to feel much difference between a 5W-, a 0W-, or a 10W- synthetic in real life conditions. On the other hand, the higher the viscosity at operating temperature, the more internal drag.
I have yet to see any documentation that Mobil 1 0W-40 or 0W-anything is as good or better than AMSOIL Series 2000 0W-30.
