Problem is that there is less traction with SUV's too!

SUV's have poor cornering traction compared to a good car regardless of conditions. Any vehicle can have insuffient margin of traction on poor roads but the point at which all hell breaks loose is going to be lower for the SUV. Thus, although it is a huge factor it isn't just over confidence that helps increase the likeihood of lost control.
