in case of ice and snow.
It is not just a simple tire (rubber) and road (solid) interface anymore. We are looking at ice/water/snow and road with the tire under rolling condition. The unknown is the ice/water/snow intermediary and how it affects braking/traction.
We all agree to the advantage of 4WD or AWD as power can be applied to all wheels as opposed to a maximum of two wheels in FWD or RWD, so you get more places to put power down, hence up to speed faster in slippery conditions.
It still amazes me as to how a car can stop in the wet or under icy conditions. Water, a liquid, by definition cannot support a strong shear force, so theoretically, the tire would skid as long as there is a molecule thick of water between the tire and the road. I would presume there is always a film of water between the tire and snow/ice, except under extreme cold, because of the effect of pressure (due to the weight) of the car (as one would find under the blade of a skate). Maybe during braking, the friction and pressure so generated actually drive the water out in between the tire and a solid surface be it solid ice or asphalt.
Maybe someone in the know would post.
