Chrysler got a free ride on quality through the late 80s and 90s. Their transmisions are notorious. I've had to change some trannys in my GM trucks these last few years -but at least I understand why, and have rebuilt them with some heavier duty parts that should be pretty bullet proof. But with Chrysler's, it can be hard to find rebuilders who are willing to warranty their work. At one point they had to put a cast aluminum pan on the transmissions to give their cases more torsional strength.
They also cut corners worse than any of the domestic auto companies -they try to do it more where you don't see it. But after haveing owned a number of GM cars and trucks, I rented a couple of Chrysler products that were supposed to be in the market bracket of the Bonneville, & Park Avenue and there was no comparison. The thing had ride and handling like a oversized Cavalier.
Most of their focus has been on styling, and to some extent, powertrain (engines). But quality stunk. Stuff that gets bolted down on a GM or Ford, gets a stamped clip to secure it in Chryslers. I did some work at Ford for a time. THe engineers there couldn't believe some of the crap that was happening when they put the Dodge Ram on the shaker stand. Stuff was eventually falling off!
It will be a looong time before I ever consider a Chrysler product. Hopefully, some of the M-B way of building cars will rub off.
