For everyone that remember the discussion from the 9-5 board some month ago.

I have a 96 900S here that have gone 23K miles in EXACTLY one year, WITHOUT any oilchanges (I guess the owner hates his car).

I took the filter apart and the paper is more fragile than the "dead sea scrolls".
This is a Saab OEM filter, and what impressed me is that even though the paper is crumbling under my fingers, when looking down into each fold you can see that the paper is still intact and no oil have gone through unfiltered.
Another, low cost filter I saw, had big pieces of the paper missing.

This certainly is to push the envelope mileage vice, and it's only a one case study.

But my point is that, at some mileage and time, the filters starts to break down. And it can very well be within a year if it have excess mileage.

Many other filters with low mileage (less than 5K) and 2 or 3 years of service, have looked almost brand new. But in those cases, the oil might have taken a beating instead because of age and cold starts.

Just my 2 cents.
