Well, I defenitly don't have enough cases to produce a formula where the time and mileage meet up.
But as in this case, 23K miles and one year is way more than what's good for the filter.
And 5K miles and 2-3 years seems to be ok for the filter (but maybe not the oil). IF a quality filter is used.
We would need more cars with 10-15K miles and 1 or 2 years on the neck, to be able to draw a finer conclusion.
I'm working on it.
What I want to find is a good rule for the general public, not the hard core experts that is looking for the ultimate driving/changing range.
I enjoy reading about all the knowledge from Saab owners and the oil issue here on the board. But it's not feasible for a shop to keep different change schedules for different customers.
Certainly, if the car owner is on top of it and knows the driving style, he can keep track of it and ask for special oil changes.
Hope that answers some of your questions.
Another reason for setting an oil change schedule that might be tighter than what the oil actually can take, is that it's a good idea to get the customer in and check over the car a couple of times a year. That way we can find the hose or belt or waterpump that start to go bad before it gets serious. Especially in LA where they need the car every day.
Owners that use quick lube places, misses out on that since they ONLY get the oil change and nothing more.
My 2 cents
