Maybe I'm nuts, but when I was given an echo for a rental in puerto rico, there was something strangely satisfying about having that little thing hauling ass and weaving in and out of traffic on the highway across the island. To me there is just something about taking an underpowered, undersuspended, generally weak car, and driving it like a crazy man.
Plus, while the interior was certainly cheesy (center instrument pod), it was cool to see toyota trying something different, the dash seemed as if it was 8 miles away from you, giving the illusion of space in the pass. compartment.
Another rental that surprised me was a 1997 chevy corsica V6. Mind you this is a cheapo car that I would never own (too fugly), but that thing MOVED. it was also bright red which made it stood out in the student parking lot at my High School.
Worst rental: "Ugly Duck" ford escort (about 8 years old and with a different color hood). This thing was just embarassing, but i did save some $$.
